January – Building Foundations for Growth
January is a fresh start—a chance to build strong foundations for the year ahead. This month, we’re focusing on two powerful ideas: finding balance in our daily life and unlocking new opportunities through learning.
It’s easy to feel weighed down by endless to-do lists or unsure where to begin with our goals. That’s why we need to simplify, refocus, and grow with tools and inspiration that work in real life. From reducing our mental load to exploring free learning platforms, this month is all about taking small, meaningful steps toward a brighter, more empowered us.
Let’s start building together—step by step, one day at a time.

Simplify Your Load, Step by Step
Have you ever considered that some tasks on your plate might not need to be there at all? Here are three new strategies from our worksheet to help you reassess:
Ask, "Does this really need doing?"
Some tasks only feel urgent because they’re familiar. Pause and question whether they’re essential.Lean into tools and apps.
Automate wherever possible. From meal planning apps to shared family calendars, technology can save hours. For instance, I use a free meal-planning app called Mealime, saving me hours every month—because “What’s for dinner?” shouldn’t be a daily crisis.Build and refine your support squad.
Write down who’s in your inner and wider circles. Whether it’s a partner, a neighbor, or a local service, knowing who to lean on lightens the mental load.
Take five minutes today to list one task to delegate, one tool to try, and one person to ask for help.
Emotional Growth
Transform Anger into Insight
Emotions like anger aren’t obstacles—they’re opportunities for growth. By tuning into these feelings, we can uncover what truly matters and align our actions with our values.
Here’s a quick exercise to transform anger into clarity:
Name It: Identify why you're feeling angry.
Example: I’m angry because I feel like my efforts aren’t being noticed.Redirect It: Ask what action you can take to honor your feelings.
Example: Set a boundary or express your needs.Anchor It: Ground yourself with a calming activity like a walk or holding something comforting.
🖤 These reflections are part of my upcoming journal, Shadow and Light: A Journal for Self-Discovery. Stay tuned for its release!
Envy: A Mirror to Our Dreams
Envy gets a bad reputation, but what if it’s not all bad? What if it’s just a clue about what’s possible for you? When I was younger, I used to envy friends who seemed effortlessly confident. They made it look so easy. But when I finally stopped to unpack those feelings, I realized my envy wasn’t about them. It was about me and the confidence I wanted to feel for myself.
Instead of letting envy weigh us down, let’s pause and look at it differently:
What is this feeling really telling me? Is it shining a light on something I want to work toward?
How can I use this as fuel instead of falling into the comparison trap?
Envy doesn’t have to be the villain. It can be your guide, pointing you toward the dreams you might have forgotten or ignored.
🖤 Want to dig deeper? My upcoming journal, Shadow and Light, is all about turning emotions like envy into tools for growth. Stay tuned!

Trudy Ederle: Young Woman and the Sea

Olympic Achievements: Won three medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
Determined Spirit: Conquered the English Channel on her second attempt, despite icy waters and exhaustion.

Maria Callas: Living Boldly, Singing Freely
Maria Callas was much more than an opera singer; she was a transformative artist who poured her entire soul into her craft. Known as La Divina, her story is one of ambition, resilience, and reinvention.
Humble beginnings: Born in 1923 to Greek immigrant parents in New York, Maria’s childhood was anything but glamorous. Criticism and sacrifice shaped her early years, but they also fueled her drive to succeed.
Living Her Art: Maria didn’t just sing; she became her characters. Every performance was filled with so much raw emotion that audiences felt every heartbreak, every triumph right alongside her.
Unstoppable resilience: Her personal life was a tabloid favorite, and vocal challenges later in her career could have crushed her. But Maria kept going, chasing greatness even when the odds were stacked against her.
Now, Angelina Jolie brings Maria’s story to life in Maria, a film that captures her passion and her journey to live boldly and unapologetically.
The first time I heard Callas sing, I remember feeling completely floored. It wasn’t just her voice—it was the way you could feel every ounce of who she was in every note. It made me think: What would happen if we all showed up in the world that way?

Learning Never Gets Old:
International Education Day
I was chatting with Erminia from our community last week, and she shared something that made me smile: "I just signed up for my first digital design course at 45, and you know what? It's actually fun!"
That’s what learning is really about—stepping out of our comfort zones and surprising ourselves by trying something new. It’s not about perfect grades or fancy degrees—it’s about growth, curiosity, and the joy of discovery.
Tomorrow, January 24th, is International Education Day, a day to remind us how lucky we are to have access to education. Established by the United Nations in 2018, this day highlights that education is a right, not a privilege. Did you know that over 244 million children still don’t have access to school? It makes us appreciate the opportunities we have while motivating us to work toward a more equitable future.
This year's theme is "Education for Empowerment" - fancy words for a simple truth: learning helps us grow stronger.
What’s New in Learning?
• Education goes beyond textbooks—it’s about coding, critical thinking, and life skills.
• Learning happens everywhere—whether in classrooms, online, or chatting with friends.
• There’s no age limit—seriously, some of the most inspiring students I know are in their 60s and 70s!

Emotional Growth
The Courage to Forgive Yourself
Forgiveness isn’t about erasing the past. It’s about changing how we carry it into the future. As we grow, self-forgiveness becomes a vital step in healing.
Pause and ask yourself:
What regret am I holding onto?
How can I offer myself the same grace I’d give a dear friend?
Forgiveness is the bridge from where we are to where we want to be. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
What would it feel like to let go of regret today?
Discover reflections like this and more in my upcoming journal, Shadow and Light. Exciting details coming soon.
Real Talk: When Change Feels Scary
A few days ago, while spring cleaning my garage, I found my old journal from my first international move. Seven countries later, reading those pages full of worry and hope hit differently. Each time my husband's job took us somewhere new, that familiar flutter of uncertainty would return—new culture, new language, new beginnings. Just finding the local grocery store felt like a victory some days.
But here's what these moves have taught me: fear and strength aren't opposites—they're dance partners. Those wobbly feelings? They're not just normal; they're often signposts pointing toward our next growth opportunity. Looking back, I see how each scary step opened doors I couldn't have imagined. Every new country brought lessons I would have missed if I'd stayed in my comfort zone.
What Helps When Fear Shows Up:
Take tiny steps (seriously, celebrating small wins counts!)
Find someone who gets it
Remember that being scared AND brave at the same time is totally normal
Notice where fear might be inviting you to grow
Let's Reflect Together:
What has fear taught you about your own strength?
What's one small thing you can do today that your future self will thank you for?
🖤 Want to dive deeper? I'm exploring these themes in my upcoming journal, Shadow and Light. It's a space where we can embrace both our uncertainties and our courage. Stay tuned!

SELENA QUINTANILLA:
THE QUEEN WHO REDEFINED MUSIC
Some stories stay with us forever, and Selena's is one of them. From humble beginnings, Selena Quintanilla performed with her family band, Los Dinos, before becoming a worldwide sensation. The Queen of Tejano music showed us what happens when talent, passion and love meet determination.
🎤 A Voice That Broke Barriers: Selena’s music mixed traditional Mexican styles with pop, creating something that crossed cultural boundaries and spoke to hearts everywhere.
🌟 An Entrepreneurial Spirit: Selena didn’t stop at music. She created her own fashion line because... why not? The Selena Collection showed off her bold, unique style. Even today, her influence lives on through collaborations like the 2020 Macy's collection.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Justice for All
Sometimes, the quietest voices leave the loudest echoes. Ruth Bader Ginsburg—fondly known as RBG—dedicated her life to turning fairness into more than an ideal. As a lawyer and Supreme Court Justice, she showed us that persistence and clear vision can move mountains.
Picture this: A young woman graduates first in her class at Columbia Law School, only to find law firms unwilling to hire her because of her gender. Sound familiar? Many of us have faced similar barriers, though perhaps in different forms. But Ruth didn't just get angry—she got strategic. She transformed her frustration into action, showing us how to challenge the status quo with courage and resolve.
Her Legacy: When you receive equal pay for equal work, when you can open a bank account without a male co-signer, when you can serve on a jury—these aren't just rights we've always had. They exist because Ruth fought for them. She secured these victories through her brilliant legal strategy at the ACLU's Women’s Rights Project. She also understood that lasting change comes from building bridges, not walls. That's why she often chose male plaintiffs for gender discrimination cases, proving that equality lifts everyone up.
"Fight for the things you care about, but do it
in a way that will lead others to join you."
Personal Side of Power: Beyond her legal genius, Ruth was refreshingly human. She worked out regularly (yes, even doing planks in her 80s!), loved opera, and maintained a beautiful friendship with her ideological opposite, Justice Antonin Scalia. Her marriage to Martin Ginsburg was a testament to true partnership—he cooked, she changed the world, and together they demonstrated what equality looks like in practice.
Remember: We don't need to sit on the Supreme Court to make a difference. Every time we stand up for fairness, mentor someone, or challenge unfair practices in our workplace, we're carrying forward Ruth’s legacy of persistent, principled action. Small, consistent actions can create ripples that improve lives.
Want to dive deeper into Ruth's story? Watch On the Basis of Sex for an inspiring look at her early career, or RBG for a comprehensive view of her remarkable life journey. Here’s a short video of some of her most inspiring beliefs:
Ruth’s life shows us that transformation begins with small, steady steps. So, what’s your fight for change?
